Abstract : A loanword from Aramaic with roots in Sumerian (gur) , the kurr (pl. akrār ) was the largest unit of measure used in the mediaeval Middle East, especially Iraq, for weighing. It first appeared in Arabic in the third/ninth century, when the Arab geographer Ibn Khurradādhbih (d. c.299/912) used it to quantify the harvest in Iraq (Ibn Khurradādhbih, 8).
