Abstract	:	The Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS, Islamic Religious Council of Singapore) is a statutory board responsible for administering Muslim affairs and representing the interests of Singapore’s Muslim community, comprising fourteen percent of the population (2015), the majority of whom are ethnic Malays. Notwithstanding a general policy of equal treatment of religious and ethnic groups, Malays enjoy a “special status” as “indigenous people,” and the government is mandated “to protect…and promote their…religious…interests” (Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, art. 152).
