Abstract
:
Mame Diarra Bousso (c. 1835–c. 1860), also called Diarratoullah (Wolof, neighbour of God, Ar. Jāratallāh), was the mother of Shaykh Amadou Bamba (d. 1927), who founded the Senegalese Muridiyya (Murīdiyya) Ṣūfī order. There is little information about Mame (an honorific title for a deceased person of high esteem, used for men and women) Diarra’s life, but there is a rich repertoire of oral histories, miracle legends, poems, and songs about her, constituting a cultural treasure shared by Murids all over the world and well known to most Senegalese.
