Abstract	:	Masʿūd b. Muḥammad (r. 529–47/1134–52) belonged to the fifth generation of Saljūq sultans in Iran. He was born in 502/1108, most probably in Isfahan, the capital of his father, Sulṭān Muḥammad b. Malikshāh (r. 498–511/1105–18). When Masʿūd was still a youth, Muḥammad entrusted him to an atabeg (Ar. atābak , a great amīr responsible for the prince’s education). Like his father, Masʿūd bore the laqab (honorific title) of Ghiyāth al-Dunyā wa-l-Dīn (Succourer of the religion). Masʿūd was twelve when his
