Abū Bishr Mattā b. Yūnus al-Qunnāʾī (d. 328/940) was one of the foremost Arabic Christian philosophers and scholars in ʿAbbāsid lands during the fourth/tenth century. A member of the Eastern (Nestorian) Church—“a Greek from the people of Dayr Qunnā” (Ibn al-Nadīm, 263–4; Ibn al-Qifṭī, 323)—he is said to have studied in the School of Mar Mārī (Uskūl Mar Mārī) in the monastery at Dayr Qunnā (ninety kilometres south of the ʿAbbāsid capital, Baghdad) before moving to Baghdad sometime in the 320s/930s,
