Abstract : The distinctive architecture of Mosul represented an essential part of the city’s cultural heritage, but almost all examples of the most important early architecture were deliberately destroyed in 2014–7 by radicals of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL, Daesh). From an archaeological perspective, Mosul has always been overshadowed by its more famous ancestor, Assyrian Nineveh, situated on the opposite bank of the Tigris.
