Abstract : Muḥammad al-Wālī b. Sulaymān b. Abī Muḥammad al-Wālī al-Fulānī al-Baghirmāwī al-Barnāwī al-Ashʿarī al-Mālikī (fl. c.1099/1688) was a religious scholar (ʿālim) in Baghirmī, a vassal state of Bornu (Bornū), in central Sudanic Africa. He was born in the village of Abgar, in Baghirmī, where his family had settled one or two generations earlier. The family were members of the Fulbe (Ar., Fūlānī) ethnic/professional group, which played an important role in the propagation of Islam in Africa. According to oral tradition, Muḥammad
