Abstract	:	Mārūn ʿAbbūd (1886–1962), Lebanese literary critic, writer, and poet, was born on 9 February 1886 in ʿAyn Kifāʿ. At the time of his death, he was considered one of the foremost intellectuals of his time. After a religious education—his parents had hoped he would undertake an ecclesiastical career—he continued his studies at the Madrasat al-Ḥikma in Beirut, which provided a milieu more favourable to his literary aspirations. He taught from 1907 to 1957, first at the Université Saint-Joseph and the Collège des Frères Maristes of
