Ṣalāḥ Abd al-Ṣabūr (1931–81) was an influential Egyptian poet and pioneering practitioner of Arabic “free verse” (al-shiʿr al-ḥurr) . Born and raised in the delta town of Zaqāzīq, he read widely as a child and, as a teenager, briefly associated himself with the Muslim Brotherhood before pursuing his higher education in Cairo. After earning a degree in Arabic from Cairo University in 1951, he was employed briefly as a teacher, but he soon switched to journalism, working, most notably, for the weekly Rūz al-Yūsuf . He later
