Abstract	:	[al-] ʿAlawiyya ( in Syria and Palestine from 1932). The ʿAlawiyya order ( ṭarīqa , lit., “path”) has developed from its mother order ʿAlawiyya-Darqāwiyya-Shādhiliyya, founded in 1333/1914 by Shaykh Aḥmad b. ʿAlīwa or al-ʿAlawī, from Mostaghanem (Algeria). On his way back from the ḥajj (pilgrimage to Mecca), in 1932, Shaykh al-ʿAlawī (1869–1934), made a short stop in Damascus in order to appoint Muḥammad al-Hāshimī (d. 1961) his representative in the region and to designate him as a full-fledged spiritual guide (murshid) , rather than a mere
