Abstract	:	[al-] ʿAlawiyya (in the Maghrib) refers to a Ṣūfī path (ṭarīqa) and branch of the Shādhiliyya-Darqāwiyya founded in 1333/1914 by Shaykh Aḥmad b. ʿAlīwa, or al-ʿAlawī (1869–1934), from Mostaghanem, Algeria, who was originally affiliated with the ṭarīqa ʿĪsāwiyya and was an autodidact whose spiritual influence is still widely recognised today. One of the reasons that this group split from the Darqāwā lies in the reintroduction, by this shaykh , of the practice of spiritual retreat (khalwa) , the effects of which on the disciples were controlled by the
