Abstract	:	ʿAlī al-Zaybaq is the protagonist of an Arabic popular story ( Qiṣṣat [or Sīrat] ʿAlī al-Zaybaq , “The story of Mercury Ali”) that dates from the Mamlūk era. ʿAlī is one of several prominent characters in the narrative, others being Aḥmad al-Danaf (“Ahmad the Plague”) and the female trickster Dalīla al-Muḥtāla (“Dalīla the Crafty”). Supposedly set in early ʿAbbāsid times, the narrative is episodic in structure and focuses on the many adventures and stratagems of its heroes, who are rogues (ʿayyārūn) and ruffians (zuʿr) , leaders of the mediaeval
