Abstract	:	ʿAṣabiyya referred in Arab antiquity to kinship solidarity. The verb ʿaṣaba means to bind, fold, or wind, and the noun ʿaṣaba denotes the blood relations in the male line. Various translations and interpretations of ʿaṣabiyya have been suggested by modern scholars, ranging from “group feeling,” “esprit de corps,” “cohesiveness,” or “solidarity” to “idea of nationhood,” but all of them refer to the later complex reading attributed to it by the philosopher Ibn Khaldūn (d. 808/1406) (see below). ʿAṣabiyya was a major principle in the moral code and practice of
