Abstract : ʿArūbī (Algerian: ʿarbī / ʿarūbī / ʿurūbī; Moroccan: ʿrūbi / ʿrōbi; Tunisian: ʿurūbī; French: aroubi) is a general designation for a popular urban genre of music in the countries of northwest Africa (i.e., Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia). Originally, these were brief compositions in the so-called “Malḥūn Maghrebi,” a regional dialect of Arabic used in poetry that exhibits a certain Bedouin character and that is intended to be sung. According to El-Boudali Safir, the roots of ʿarūbī can be traced back to the late-seventeenth century (Safir, 15). “ʿArūbī” literally means “Bedouins,” “
