ʿAbd al-Qādir Ḥashshānī (1956–99) was an Algerian Islamist activist known for leading the Islamic Salvation Front (al-Jabha al-Islāmiyya lil-Inqādh, or Front Islamique du Salut, FIS) to success during the first round of the legislative elections of December 1991. Ḥashshānī was born in 1956, in ʿAyn Makhlūf, near Qālima (Guelma), in eastern Algeria. After studying at the Institut du Pétrole of Boumerdes, an elite school specialised in the training of engineers and executives for the energy industry, he worked for the Algerian state-owned company Sonatrach.
