Abstract	:	ʿĀshūrāʾ is the tenth day of Muḥarram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. ʿĀshūrāʾ has been important to Muslims primarily because it was identified by Muḥammad as a holy day of fasting and because it was the day of the tragic massacre at Karbalāʾ, in 61/680. There are other associations with the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ as well, especially in popular religion and folklore.
