Abstract	:	Ḥumaynī poetry (the word is of uncertain etymology) is a genre of semi-dialectical strophic poetry that developed in Yemen during the Rasūlid period (626–858/1228–1454). Its origins are presumed to lie in the muwashshaḥāt of al-Andalus, strophic poetry sometimes containing a closing verse in Romance vernacular. Ṣūfīs in North Africa and the Middle East, in turn, adapted and interpreted this genre, which then arrived in Yemen. In its early incarnation, lyrical ḥumaynī poetry was closely associated with the spiritual concerts (samāʿ) of local Ṣūfīs. Although the
