Abstract : "To test the claimed universal model of Five-Factor Personality structure, we used teacher ratings of 493 10- to 12-year-old Chinese school children on an adjective rating scale developed by Digman and Inouye (1986). Factor analysis of the teacher ratings strongly replicated four of the "big five" personality factors that have been observed in a variety of other cultures. The fifth factor, emotional stability, was also evident, as was a sixth factor tentatively named ego strength. Overall, inquiring intellect was more important among Chinese than among American school children.
