Abstract
:
This dissertation investigates the musical codex of Amir Khān Gorji, which consists of two major parts: (1) the theoretical tract and song-text collection of Aqā Mo'men, and (2) the theoretical tract and song-text collection of Amir Khān. The former was the leading composer and the head of court musicians during the reigns of Shah Safi and Shah `Abbās II and the latter was a Georgian servant (gholām ) and musician employed in the service of the last Safavid ruler, Shah Sultan Hosayn (r. 1105–1135/1694–1722). In order to contextualize the significance of the codex in terms of the broader musical landscape of Safavid Iran this dissertation will also deal with several other general topics concerning music in the Safavid period. These topics include a general overview of sources on Safavid music, an examination of the major musical centers in the Safavid kingdom, an assessment of the relationship between Safavid music and Timurid music, as well as an examination of the relationship between music of the Safavid court and its contemporaries in the region, most notably the Ottoman court.
