Abstract	:	In this article, I explore the importance of smell in defining the interplay of context with the analyst's activity of working up a case study following sessions with a patient. Audio and visual sense reports are more easily measurable and so they have taken precedence but the immediate and unconscious combination of smell with intuition underscores my contention that there are no ‘spontaneous’ insights – the build up of sensual clues plays into the analyst's and the patient's memories to portray a more valid and complete (albeit subjective) reporting of the ‘dynamic unconscious’ – in fact, analytic theory comes after the sensual clues are in place.
