Abstract : In light of recent major economic and socio-cultural changes, indicators used by western models of development and modernization to describe the region of the Middle East as 'transitional' no longer apply. The alternate 'dependency theory' is suggested as a tool by which the process of modernization in the area could be better understood. On the traditional-developed continuum, the Middle East is characterized as quasi-developed, a unique phase distinct from the transitional or developed phases.
