Abstract
:
Class-structuration in the Arab world, as distinguished from class-formation in capitalist Europe, has been mediated through mini-state formation, generated by an alliance of external powers and internal forces. No doubt, successive modes of production, as exemplified especially in Egypt and Algeria, but also in the other Arab countries, gave rise to corresponding class-structuration. Nevertheless, political power also retarded or accelerated the development of productive forces and corresponding class-structuration. Despite several state-related public, even 'socialist', efforts, the local power and economic structures have been reinforced, often with the assistance of foreign powers.
