Abstract : This article analyses India's shift from a socialist to a free enterprise economic system in the context of India's electoral politics which produced two minority governments in 18 months and the second assassination of a member of the Nehru family in seven years. Specifically, the country's one party dominant political system, Jawaharlal Nehru's economic model, and the policies followed by Indira and Rajiv Gandhi are evaluated. The 1989 election which led to a short-lived government under V.P. Singh, and the 1991 campaign that returned Congress to power preceded the recent policy departures. Their implications for India's foreign relations are also examined.
