Abstract
:
The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a major research project conducted in England concerning the organization of the Church of England in rural areas. Starting in 1988 this project, entitled the Rural Church Project, studied all Anglican clergy and a sample of laity in five English Dioceses to produce the most extensive study of religious organization and belief available in Britain. This paper focuses only upon one fraction of the empirical results to describe the distinctive feature of churchmanship amongst the clergy, to introduce the idea of the clergy's 'spiritual style', and to indicate changes in churchmanship effected through pastoral experience.
