Abstract
:
The Church of Sweden has experienced considerable changes during the 1980's. It seems though, as if possibilities for and objections to change are varying in different parishes. The purpose of this study is to examine conditions for change concerning parish activities in parishes in the church of Sweden. Four case studies have been conducted and data were collected by the help of studies of documents and qualitative interviews. Many changes had taken place in each parish. It became evident that the potentiality for change in the parish activities was dependant on the guidance and the culture of the parish. The guidance towards objectives was more favourable for change than management according to traditions and rules. A balance between professional and political management was more favourable than either one or the other. An open culture was more favourable for change than a closed culture. The different systems of management and culture work together, so that a parish with an open culture guidance towards objectives and a balance between professional and political guidance has the most favourable conditions for change on the whole. Theological discussions and belief did not seem to effect change in the parish activities. The Church of Sweden has experienced considerable changes during the 1980's.
