Abstract
:
This article aims to report an empirical study of charismatic prophecy as completed within the Church of England. This study initially formed part of a larger study seeking to define and describe the phenomenon for the purposes of theological examination. In this present form the empirical data is presented and reflected upon in relation to three specific approaches. First the sociological study of M. McGuire among Catholics in the USA is considered. Secondly, the psychological interpretation of D. Tappeiner is described and interacted with. Thirdly, the theological comparison made by M. Turner is also engaged. The discussion reflects some of the more obvious points which a comparison of the empirical data with these perspectives generate. It is the view of the author that however charismatic prophecy is defined and analysed, the revelatory experiences (upon which this modem phenomenon is based) belong to the broad category of prayer.
