Abstract	:	The demography of the Jewish family is indispensable for the study of the nature of Jewish childhood in late antiquity. Demography in this context refers to the probable mortality rate, fertility rate and average age of first marriage for the Jews of our period. Together these demographic factors create a model of the duration and rhythm of the life-course; a model of the skeletal structure of the ancient Jewish family. We explore below the nature of Jewish childhood in late antiquity in light of the portrait of the family that emerges from a study of ancient family demographics.
