Abstract	:	Brueggemann’s justly celebrated work is distinguished by a prose style that does justice to both its theme and subject matter. The thesis of the book, in particular the critique of the ‘royal consciousness’, stands up when extended to the teaching and activity of Jesus yet fails to fully account for Jesus’ bold and unapologetic use of the language of kingdom and rule.
