Abstract : The myth of modernism holds that the process of desacralization was its most emblematic and pervasive effect. However, far from being forgotten in the work of Argentinian conceptualist León Ferrari, religion has had an essential place in it for five decades. This essay sets out to trace the theme of hell in Ferrari’s work, which the artist has linked to oppression and violence in Latin America, Viet Nam, and Iraq, in order to demonstrate the persistence and centrality of religion in Ferrari’s art and in the Argentine milieu, thereby disavowing the illusion that we have been living in a sustained period of secularism that is only now being supplanted by a global return to religion.
