Abstract	:	The time-honored traditions of prudence of small communities are based on a deep respect for the integrity of creation. However they are confronted with economic and development agenda that are unraveling the very capacity of peoples to sustainable livelihood. This article explores the relationship between Berry's vision and the realities of these communities who are attempting to maintain their ecological traditions. Berry's vision of progress is challenged from the perspective of small poor communities, as well as the problem of the universalizing of knowledge.
