Technological advances made in the fields ofcommunications and information have given rise to newissues and challenges with which copyright systemseverywhere have to deal. This thesis examines thesignificance of these challenges to the Jlalaysiancopyright system and the responses made by the CopyrightAct 1987 to the issues presented.Chapter 1 provides a brief historical evolution ofMalaysian copyright law, while Chapter 2 outlines the lawof copyright as embodied in the Copyright Act 1987. Boththese Chapters provide an introduction to the rest of theChapters in the thesis. Chapter 3 examines the impact ofvariousrecorders,technologies,video tapesuch asrecorders,photocopiers, soundinformation storage andretrieval systems and satell i te and cable transmissions,on the rights of copyright owners. Chapter 4 discussesdevelopments in computer technology, in particular issuesrelating to the legal protection of computer programs,video games, computer output, databases and integratedcircuit chips under copyright law. Advances in technologyhave also increased the economic significance ofindustrial designs, including functional designs. Chapter5 focuses on the question of their legal protection andthe problem of the overlap between copyright and designslaws. In Chapter 6, the problems of the enforcement ofcopyright in the face of technological advances areexaDined.To lend a proper perspective to the legal posi tioD inKalaysia, an overview of the international situation andthe recommendations proposed in response to the issuesposed, is provided in each chapter.
