Abstract
:
This study of David Hume suggests that the unity of histhought Is to be found more In an attitude of mind than Ina precise body of epistemological statements. His'mitigated scepticism' was the original combination of anexperimental approach with a searching mind and a ratherdisenchanted attitude towards the attainment of perfectionIn knowledge and In the practical world. But my thesisaddresses these questions only Implicitly. The generalpicture of the Humean approach to things political andphi losophlcal Is depicted against the background of a closeexamination of two other themes: Hume's development towardsa more 'popular' phi losophy and the phi losophlcal Import ofhis moral and political theory. The first subject Isstudied through an analysis of the formal qualities ofHume's phi losophlcal writings; the second, through adiscussion of Hume's position on the origin of Justice andgovernment and one's obi Igatlon to them. The conclusionthat my thesis tentatively advances Is that both Inmetaphysics and politics Hume's approach Is based upon theattainment of a state of equl IIbrlum between theoreticaland practical considerations, and between sceptical andnaturalistic tendencies. Hume's desire for balance can onlybe understood within the Intellectual context of eighteenthcentury thought. This Is the reason for the considerableattention that the thesis devotes to the reconstruction ofthe historical setting within which Hume's thoughtdeveloped. However, when correctly Interpreted, Hume'sIdeas clearly have a contribution to make to anunderstanding of a world which Is very different from hisown.
