Abstract : This thesis presents a detailed examination of the linguistic style and vocabulary found in the two famous Russian satirical novels, 'Twelve Chairs' (1928) and 'The Golden Calf' (1931), the work of well-known Soviet writers Il'ya Il'f (1897-1937) and Evgeny Petrov (1902-1942). The introductory chapter covers background material: biographical summaries of the authors, a note on their unusual collaboration, and remarks on the political and social milieu pertinent to the authors' lives and work. The bulk of the thesis is contained in three chapters of detailed analysis: the first examines the lexical content of the novels (both the changes in post-revolutionary Russian language usage and the authors' original linguistic contributions); the second chapter covers the use of stylistic devices in the novels (for example, parody, metaphor, puns, etc. ); and the third chapter discusses the particular use of incongruous linguistic juxtapositions. A short conclusion summarizes the findings from the linguistic analysis and indicates the seminal importance of these two novels in the development of satirical writing in the Soviet Union.
