Abstract	:	The anthropological concept of cultural imaginaries that I develop in this thesis is critical for understanding how cultured concepts of ethnicity, politics, and belonging figure in the politics of performance in Zanzibar. The concept of cultural imaginaries I employ develops upon many previous anthropological engagements with Tanzania, providing an original persoective on its political and racial conflicts in the past, and comprehending its current social and political challenges cultural terms.
