Abstract
:
This study investigates the binding effects of pronominals and controlled elements in Colloquial Modern Persian within the Government and Binding framework. Chapter Two accounts for the distribution of seven third person singular pronouns. The binding domain and structural relation between the pronoun and its antecedent determine the distribution of six of the pronominals. The Binding Principles are revised using the notions C-free (not linked to c-commanding NPs) and C-free (not linked to non-c-commanding NPs). A minimality condition constrains the binding of the seventh pronoun, un. The emphatic pronoun xodes is analyzed as having the structure pro xod-AGR corresponding to the use of xod with lexical NPs and thus explaining the similar binding of the null subject and xodes. Chapter Three begins the examination of a construction where an empty subject of a finite embedded clause obligatorily corefers with a matrix NP. Three analyses are considered involving NP-t, null pronominal, and PRO. Ultimately it is argued that this is a control construction. Chapter Four evaluates two types of accounts of control. Binding Theory approaches based on non-finite control where ungoverned PRO is an anaphor A-bound by a matrix NP fail since the Persian controlled element is governed within the embedded clause. Generalized control analyses also fail given evidence that the Persian null pronominal and the controlled null subject are not identified via the same process. Chapter Five proposes an analysis of finite control where a non-overt operator in the SPEC(C) binds a variable in the embedded controlled position. The differences of finite and non-finite control result from variation in Case-assignment and WH-movement. A uniform account of the use of the complementizer in Persian control sentences and the lack of that-t effects in WH-movement is given based on Extended X-bar Theory, the split ECP and Specifier-HEAD agreement which reduces the need for COMP Indexing. This approach also accounts for control in purpose clauses and short infinitives.
