Abstract : This study aims at comparing heavy metals presence in two waste dumpsite in relating to it environs; Gbagede community in Ifelodun Local Government of Kwara State and Ilokun community in Ifelodun Local Government area of Ekiti State hosts the dumpsites in this research study. The dumpsite is located within 0- 50m for Gbagede and 50m-100m in Ilokun to the high density residential area as development is fast approaching the dumpsite. However, the necessary safety distance between human settlements and waste landfills, which must be of at least 1,000 m and that between landfills and forests, protected areas and watercourses, of at least 500 m was violated here. Randomly collected soil and water samples from different areas of Gbagede and Ilokun dumpsite as well as the community were analyzed for heavy metals using AAS. Results shown that most of the areas have higher concentrations of heavy metals, It was observed that Gbagede dumpsites have higher concentration of these metals (heavy metals) in soil compare to Ilokun dumpsite the trend of metal in soil are GD>ID>GCOM > ICOM for Cd, Mn, Fe, Zn and ID>ICOM>GD>GCOM for Cu as revealed in the result however these metals also revealed more higher in Gbagede community compare to Ilokun community and this could be attributed to the presence of waste carrying heavier amount of these heavy metals and the proximity of this communities to the dumpsite as observed in the questionnaire it shows that Gbagede dumpsite range between 0-50m to its adjoining community while Ilokun range between 50-100m which may be one of the contributing factors. Most of these heavy metals have higher concentrations in the dumpsite and communities around compare to the control sample and world average soil which serve as standard for soil heavy metals in this study. It was also observed that Gbagede community have higher concentration of these metals (heavy metals) in water samples compare to Ilokun community. It is obvious that all water samples including leachate analysed in gbagede community contain higher metals in Fe, Mn, Cd and Cu compare to WHO(1984) recommended standard except in Zn which are within standard. Also Ilokun community has higher value of Fe in both well, borehole, stream and leachate compare to control and recommended standard, More so higher concentration of Mn was observed only in well 1, stream and leachate from Ilokun compare to the standard used in the study. Cu from Ilokun analysis was observed only in stream and leachate.
