Abstract
:
Humans have practices in their cultures that distinguish them from other cultures. They also have a belief system that manages their life and forms their rules and practices. Globalization helped bring different cultures and societies closer. Hence, it is important to learn about different cultures. As for every culture, different concepts and references can be challenging when transferring them to a different society. This research aims to shed light on the strategies used when dealing with religious references in two different modalities: subtitling and dubbing. This is achieved through analyzing the translation of the film Moana from English into Arabic as a case study. This research also aims to identify the reasons behind code-switching between modern standard Arabic (MSA) and the Egyptian dialect in the dubbed version of the film. Al-Adwan (2015) and Perego’s (2004) models are used to analyze the data to determine the strategies used to deal with religious references. In addition, Toury’s (1995) descriptive translation modal is also used to analyze the data. Moreover, this research also aims to determine the reasons behind the code-switching in the dubbed version through Appel and Muysken (1978)’s model. The study indicated that the most frequent strategy used in the subtitled version was the literal translation while the most frequent strategy used in the dubbed version was semantic misrepresentation strategy. The examples discussed in the analysis section revealed that the subtitler was not consistent when dealing with the religious expressions whereas the translator in the dubbed version was consistent in manipulating the translation in order not to include information that go against Islamic values. As for code-switching, the results showed that the poetic function is the most frequent function used in the dubbing of the film.
