Abstract

The dynamic nature of Nigerian environment and its associated cost to humanity has generated concerns of stakeholders. Despite the destructive impacts such as of pollution and other environmental hazards caused by the activities and operations of these companies, there was observable lack of disclosure of much information on the extent to which the activities have impacted on the environment. In view of this, the study provides empirical evidence on factors motivating companies to disclose their environmental information. The main objective of this study is to examine the determinants of corporate environmental disclosure of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. To achieve this objective, the specific objectives were to (i) examine the extent to which industry type influence corporate environmental disclosure; (ii) measure the degree of relationship between economic performance and corporate environmental disclosure; (iii) investigate the extent to which environmental certifications affect corporate environmental disclosure; (iv) ascertain the influence of foreign listing on corporate environmental disclosure; and (v) evaluate the variations in level of corporate environmental disclosure among sectors of listed manufacturing companies in Nigeria. The study employed Ex-post facto research design with the population consisting of seventy six (76) listed manufacturing companies, fifty five (55) out of the companies were chosen as the sample size using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size determination table. Descriptive and Robust Least Square (RLS) estimation techniques were employed in the analysis of data collected from annual reports and accounts of the sampled listed manufacturing companies for a period of five (5) years (2013-2017). Robust Least Square estimation techniques was used for the first four objectives while Kruskal Wallis H test was used to measure the level of variations of corporate environment disclosure among the sectors of the listed manufacturing firms. The study found that environmental certification is an important predictor of corporate environmental disclosure by listed manufacturing companies (Z=3.135, P=0.002) at 5% level of significance, this implies that environmental certification by international organization such as ISO plays important roles in disclosing environmental activities of companies. The study also revealed that industry type (Z=-1.873, P=0.061), economic performance (Z=0.911, P=0.362) and foreign listing (Z=1.858, P=0.063) have an insignificant effect on environmental disclosure of listed Nigerian manufacturing companies. More so, the study found existence of variations in the level of environmental disclosure among sectors of listed manufacturing companies; which implies that the nature of manufacturing companies' operations/activities differs among sectors. The study therefore concluded that environmental certification is a major and significant determinant of corporate environmental disclosure of listed manufacturing companies while other determinants such as industry type, economic performance and foreign listing have no significant effect. Therefore, the study recommends that regulatory bodies such as Federal Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) should mandate environmental reporting for all corporate entities in Nigeria.
