Abstract : Even though individuals in Nigeria have witnessed repeated exposure to traumatic events, the impact of terror attacks has gone beyond individual distress to changes in cultural values and protracted loss of community. The use of suicide bombing and sophisticated strategies has left communities in disarray. Adults living in an internally displaced persons camp in Jos, Nigeria were interviewed using a structured format and four focus groups were conducted to determine symptoms of distress and the experience of terror attacks. It was hypothesized that those who were exposed to terror would report a higher physical disturbance and emotional distress. It was also expected that participants would report unique symptoms and cultural expressions of distress that would be different from traditional trauma symptoms. Correlational and hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that terror experience was related to higher emotional distress, but not physical disturbance, as predicted. Content analysis of focus group data corroborated the quantitative results and showed unique cultural expression of distress, but not unique symptoms. Implications of community-based intervention are discussed.
