This is a pilot study, intended to begin an investigation of the challenges of English-to-Arabic language translation in Saudi Arabia by first analyzing the work of the Scientific Saudi Institute (SSI) alongside other translation initiatives throughout the country. For the last two decades, Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid development, leading to further alignment with the world around it and the global economy. Translation initiatives enhance the country’s scientific and technical development by facilitating the free exchange of ideas and information regardless of linguistic differences. Translation studies have developed significantly in Saudi Arabia, and while many institutions in the country are committed to developing more skilled translators, the Kingdom still struggles with the limited availability of dedicated and culturally fluent professional translators. This is a problem that institutions across the country are looking to solve but continue to struggle with. In an attempt to clarify the issues faced by Saudi translators, and to identify possible solutions to these issues, the current study will examine Saudi translation service that appears successful in many ways, and analyze the effectiveness as well as the influence of its methods. Establishing what is working and what is not through this case study of the SSI will provide insights into what the Saudi translation landscape is today, and even suggest avenues that other researchers may explore under different scenarios in future for a greater contextual understanding of the country’s translations dynamics. Areas of translation that this study hopes to investigate include the use of computer-assisted tools, and how to conduct high-quality. This study provides a starting point for future translators in the Scientific Saudi Institute, and other institutions throughout Saudi Arabia, to explore new translation strategies and choose the most appropriate under a given set of circumstance. This study focuses on the challenges characteristic in translating English materials to Arabic and examines how computer technology can be used to ensure a fast and efficient translation process. The translators in the Scientific Saudi Institute, and throughout the country, need to ensure that constructs are retained to capture all the implications of the English text when translated in Arabic. This study aims to investigate and emphasize the various aspects of the translation process that are often misunderstood during linguistic operation, especially the influence of people in the translation process. This dissertation is comprised of four chapters. Chapter One provides a short introduction, which reviews some literature pertinent to the dissertation and also gives a brief history of translation studies as it relates to Saudi Arabia. Chapter Two provides an overview of the development of translation initiatives in Saudi Arabia, with a focus on the Scientific Saudi Institute. Chapter Three discusses the methodology used in the dissertation. Chapter Four presents key results, data analysis, and a conclusion and recommendations. Appendices and references follow Chapter Four.
