Abstract

The project director described a context where American Christian short or mid-term missionaries encounter Arab Muslims of Amman, Jordan. Distinctions between the two groups go beyond differences in language, culture, and religion to a different way of viewing life. The project director created a ministry strategy to help the short-term missionaries better understand their own perspective on religious life while discovering the worldview of the Arab Muslims with a process he calls prophetic dialogue. He uses prophetic to describe the total biblical message the missionaries seek to proclaim, and dialogue to recognize the missionaries need to learn as they apply the biblical message they preach. Through prophetic dialogue a novice missionary can teach the gospel of Christianity and learn about Arab Muslims in Islam at the same time. The project director set out a ministry theory on how any missionary to Muslims should know Islam, know a Christian response to Muslims, and know how to relate to Muslims as people in order to communicate the gospel responsibly to the Muslims. A new short-term missionary can begin and increase their knowledge of Islam and Muslims by speaking and listening in prophetic dialogue. The missionary can seek to persuade Muslims to believe in Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection, explain the gospel from Scriptures, and/or simply offer a personal Christian witness. While telling of a personal faith in Jesus Christ, the missionary can avoid being dismissed by their Arab Muslim interlocutors by listening and learning through prophetic dialogue.
