Corruption is a global issue, but it varies in intensity, sophistication and form from country to country and is believed to be the single greatest obstacle to economic and social development. It undermines development by distorting the rule of law and weakening the institutional foundation on which economic growth depends. The long duration of undesired administrations in Sub-Saharan Africa was indeed responsible for the high rate of corruption, which has adverse effect on investment, productivity and above all, economic growth of the region. This singular reason prompted the need for this study, to particularly assess the influence of democracy on corruption, examine the influence of democratic durations on the level of corruption, determine the effect of participatory democracy on the level of corruption, and determine the effect of quality of election on the level of corruption and. The period under review was 1995-2016, using panel data. This study adopts both the inferential and descriptive statistical analysis in order to achieve the objectives. The inferential analysis involved using regression analysis, particularly the dynamic two-step system GMM to test the impact of the explanatory variables on the dependent variable. The descriptive analysis entails using tables to show some summaries and pattern of the data collected. This was done with the aid of summary statistics. Result for the effect of democracy index on corruption indicated that the coefficient of the index of democracy, oil dummy, log of RGDP per capita and adult literacy were statistically significant in affecting the level of corruption while the coefficient of other variables were insignificant. It was further revealed that the coefficient of participatory democracy and unemployment were statistically significant in affecting corruption. It was found that the coefficient of transparency in government policies and unemployment were statistically significant in affecting corruption while the othervariables were insignificant. In addition, the coefficient of duration of democracy and transparency were significant while those of other variables were insignificant in affecting the level of corruption. Conclusively, higher level of democratization in Sub Saharan-African countries influences lower levels of corruption, higher participation in democracy in Sub Saharan African countries induces a reduced level of corruption, higher quality of elections in terms of its freeness and fairness does not influence the level of corruption in Sub Saharan-African countries, the period of uninterrupted democracy has higher level of corruption than other periods without democracy or truncated democracy, transparency in terms of government policies induces a reduced level of corruption in the region, oil producing nations are less corrupt than non-oil producing nations and also unemployment rate has negative influence on the level of corruption in the region. Finally werecommend that: governments of the concern countries should encourage the public to fully participate in the democratic process so as to reduce the level of information asymmetry which might increase the tendency of corrupt practices. In addition, macroeconomic policies and programmes aimed at reducing unemployment rate should be implemented so as to reduce unemployment and encourage participation in the democratic process. Also, transparency in government policies and programmes should be enhanced so as to reduce the level of corruption in the region.
