Abstract
:
Saudi Arabia has been promoting educational reforms with the intention of improving public education and curriculum. The 21st century has witnessed the implementation of the tatweer model, which sought to alter the technical and vocational training, internet-focused programs, and curriculum language to improve the education sector. However, there are still some limitations that include lack of adequate instructors, lack of technology incorporation within classes, and cultural issues caused by gender segregation. The implementation of project-based learning (PBL) and learning management systems (LMS) also targets the improvement of the learning process and the inclusion of technology. This study sought to understand the impact that the PBL and LMS approaches could have on art programs at women’s universities. A case study methodology was followed to gather and analyze the data adhering to Stake’s (1995) qualitative research approach to the case study. The study used a sample size of approximately 25 participants, inclusive of teachers and regularly-enrolled students. The participants contributed through interviews, which used open-ended questions. The interview process featured a method from Moustakas’ (1994) qualitative approach to the phenomenological methodology, with the aim of achieving an in-depth understanding of the participants’ lived experiences. The study’s results revealed that the incorporation of technology within PBL is the future of improving education in Saudi Arabia. The combination of the PBL and LMS approaches provided the instructors with a better platform to deliver lessons, concepts, and skills to the students in a language that they can understand. Reforms are necessary to improve art education in Saudi Arabia and the involvement of all stakeholders is required.
