Abstract : Based on recommendations by the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plans to construct sixteen nuclear power plants to address an increasing demand for domestic electrical energy. In this research, a radiological assessment will be performed for releases of radioactivity to the environment via airborne emission, under normal operating conditions and an accident scenario, for a generic nuclear power plant proposed for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The proposed location for a nuclear plant is Al Jubail city by the Gulf sea. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) atmospheric dispersion model was used to estimate the air concentrations and ground depositions at various receptor locations for selected radionuclides released from the generic nuclear power plant. The results of this research indicate that the annual total effective dose equivalent from both internal and external exposure pathways for routine discharges over one year of normal operations for the proposed nuclear power plant will be within the radiation dose limit for members of the public, and have no significant environmental impacts. The total effective dose equivalent resulting from an ST4 accident scenario, however, is predicted to exceed the dose limit for members of the public, and to have significant environmental impacts.
