Abstract

In this age of globalization, when people hear the word Kurds, or when someone enters this word on searching engines, the headlines are always highlighting discussions that are related to their political situation and resistance. Due to the history of wars and oppression that this nation was and is still subjected to, it had a little space to express itself beyond the conversations of politics and identity, therefore, in this thesis, I am dedicating efforts to achieve that. This research project looks for Kurdish cinema and its quest in telling the audience who the Kurds are; I will give the reader an introduction to the Kurdish cinema and lay the foundations to focus on the internal conflicts that are encountered by the individuals in this cinema. I will investigate how those people perceive the modern values in connection with their traditional ones, which define their Kurdishness, and I will also discuss the moral development of men and women in this cinema. My analysis seeks for representing the aesthetics and the ethics that this cinema tells, therefore making it a site of learning and criticism, and a site that worth investigating. Films that I will be looking at are, Yilmaz Guney’s Yol (1982), Bahman Ghobadi’s Marooned in Iraq (2003), Hiner Saleem’s My Sweet Pepper Land (2013), and Shawkat Amin Korki’s Memories on Stone (Bîranînên li ser Kevrî, 2014).
