Abstract : The purpose of the dissertation was to determine whether Habakkuk utilized covenant evocations. As covenant mediators, prophets declared the covenant message of Yahweh, the covenant judgment of Yahweh, and the covenant restoration of Yahweh. If indeed Hebrew prophets are covenant mediators of Yahweh, then how does one recognize covenant in texts that omit the Hebrew term berit? The focus of this dissertation is the message of Habakkuk, who omitted berit from his text. The hypothesis of this dissertation is that Habakkuk evoked Israel’s covenant relationship with Yahweh in his cries and God’s responses. Chapter 1 presents the current state of research in Habakkuk and covenantal studies, along with methodology for the dissertation. Chapter 2 presents Habakkuk’s historical and literary contexts as covenantal contexts. Chapter 3 demonstrates Habakkuk’s book outline to be a plea and response structure. Chapter 4 presents an analysis of covenant elements within the text: rhetoric, themes, and words. Chapter 5 is the synthesis and conclusion of the work. Within the process of analyzing Habakkuk one will find a means of recognizing covenant in prophetic texts that omit berit.
