Abstract
:
Nigeria, one of the leading world’s exporters of oil mineral is also seen as one of the world’s poorest including inadequate infrastructures, poor economic development, high unemployment, and high level of corruption (Punch Newspaper, 2018; Ayadele & Adegboye, 2016; Amadi & Abdullah, 2012). The petroleum phenomenon has not produced the expected economic growth that abundant oil revenue supposed to usher into the country’s economy (Jike, 2010; UN Report, 2010). Human Rights Watch/Africa (1995) asserted that total oil production in Nigeria from Egi areas accounted about 70% while the total oil production in Nigeria amounted to 12.5% and oil extraction from Egi community has become the highest in Rivers State (Ellah (1995) on one hand, Rivers State on the other hand is the highest oil producing State in Nigeria at 24.2% (UUSA, 2006). Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has appeared as a strategic channel to jump start economic development initiatives and programs aimed at addressing host community’s needs (Idemudia, 2009; Ogula, 2012). The purpose of this foundational qualitative case study is to explore the CSR of Total Oil Company in view of strategic programs and projects toward community development and empowerment. A focus group of 5 participants from one of the five Egi oil communities was selected using open-ended interview questions. Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software was utilized for data analysis. The findings from this study may add to the body of knowledge which is lacking in understanding multinational corporation’s CSR in the developing and under developing economies.
