Abstract : The landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Kansas decision abolished racial segregation in American schools. However, today’s schools have fallen short of the promise of providing all students a quality education free of discrimination. One area in which racial disparity is still strong is that of school discipline. Zero-tolerance policies, designed to eliminate drugs and weapons from school campuses, have been expanded to impose harsh penalties on students for infractions such as disrespectful behavior, school truancy, doodling, and other minor offenses. These penalties, often suspensions and expulsions, fall disproportionately on minority students. However, teachers can bring equity to the situation by exercising collective teacher efficacy, pursuing racial literacy, overcoming implicit bias, and adopting alternatives to school removal. In these ways, teachers can have a positive impact on student learning and student behavior and help fulfill the promise of equal education for all.
