The rising challenges in business environment have made organizations to adopt entrepreneurial strategies to remain in business, especially for innovative sensitive products and services. As a result, banks have been facing an increasing competition with rapidly changing customers’ demands. Thus, this study examined the effect of entrepreneurial orientation on corporate performance in Nigerian banking sector. The target population was selected 15 deposit money banks listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at 31st December 2017. Secondary source of data was used in this study. The data utilized was collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, Nigerian Stock Exchange fact book and Annual financial reports and accounts of banks from 2005 to 2017. The data collected were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The tools used in the descriptive analysis included frequency tables, mean, standard deviation and correlation coefficient. The inferential statistical analyses used were pooled, random and fixed regression models based on the preferences suggested by the Hausman specification test results. Based on the panel data results, the random effect model was used to examine the effect of the five Entrepreneurial Orientation dimensions namely, innovation, risk-taking, proactiveness, autonomy and competiveness has on corporate performance measured by profitability, growth and efficiency. Findings from the results indicated that risk-taking (p = 0.013), proactiveness (p = 0.000) and autonomy (p = 0.001) were found to be significant predictors of corporate performance (profitability) at 0.05 significant. With respect to growth as a measure of corporate performance, the results revealed that only risk-taking (p = 0.000), proactiveness (p = 0.000) were significant at 0.05. Findings also revealed that innovation (p = 0.026), proactiveness (p = 0.001) and competitiveness (p = 0.000) were significant predictors of corporate performance with respect to efficiency at 0.05 significant. Based on the findings, the study concluded that entrepreneurial orientation significantly enhances corporate performance. The study thus recommends that banks should design their strategies and policies in ways that foster entrepreneurial orientation practices which will offer competitive advantage and improve sustainable performance.
