Abstract : Research indicates that Saudi Arabian international students in the United States encounter numerous unique challenges as they attempt to adjust to the American context compared to the general international student population pursuing higher education in the United States. These challenges emanate from factors that are deeply rooted in the academic, language, social, and cultural differences existing between Saudi Arabia and the United States. This study examined the educational and social experiences of Saudi international students and how their experiences influence their academic performance and social advancement when studying as English as Second Language (ESL) students in the United States. The study utilized a basic qualitative approach aimed at collecting the lived social and academic experiences of 10 Saudi international student participants pursuing higher education in Chicago, Illinois. Interviews were the primary sources of information. From the interviews, four major themes signifying the participants experiences were identified, which include (a) academic adjustment challenges and experiences of Saudi students in Chicago (b) social adaptation of Saudi students in Chicago (c) Cultural adaptation of Saudi students in Chicago, and (d) Saudi students’ experiences in mixed-learning environments. The findings of the study have great implications for the Saudi students currently studying or looking forward to pursue higher education in the United States as well as implications for the general international student population studying in the United States as ESLs.
